Deverbal from escombrar, from Vulgar Latin *excomborāre, from Proto-Celtic *comboros, derived from *kom- (with) + *bereti (to bear), or from Latin scōpa, crossed with the Celtic word or influenced by escombrar (compare Occitan escoba, Aragonese escoba and the Ibero-Romance variants).
