From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese esmolna (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Late Latin eleēmosyna, from Ancient Greek ἐλεημοσύνη (eleēmosúnē). Cognate with Portuguese esmola and Spanish limosna.
