Maltese[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Arabic أَوَّلَ أَمْس (ʔawwala ʔams). The long vowel is explainable as early contraction with the accusative ending -a, thus ʾawwala ʾamsʾawwalām(i)s. A variant ʾāmis of Arabic أَمْس (ʔams) is apparently attested in isolated dialects, but it could also be due to backformation from the aforementioned contraction.
