Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • fennef (Moselle Franconian)
  • fief (westernmost Ripuarian)

Etymology

From Old High German fimf. The now marginal variant fīf (fief) is probably native in most of the language area, but early on began to be superseded by southern and eastern forms with a preserved nasal. Compare also sechs (six) and sibbe (sieben), which are borrowed forms, too.
