[edit]From Old Swedish fortvifla, from Middle Low German vortwivelen, equivalent to för- + tvivla.[1] Cognate with Danish fortvivle, Norwegian Bokmål fortvile, Norwegian Nynorsk fortvila, Norwegian Nynorsk fortvile and German verzweifeln.
