Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Vulgar Latin *facla, from a contraction of Latin facula (little torch), from fax (torch). Doublet of făclie and faclă (borrowings through Slavic and Greek intermediates), and flacără (from a Vulgar Latin variant form).
