Borrowed from French faisan, possibly crossed with Greek φασιανός (fasianós). Ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin phasianus, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek φασιανός (phasianós, bird of the river Φᾶσις (Phâsis)).

Compare Italian fagiano and Russian фаза́н (fazán).
