From Middle Welsh ffonn, from Proto-Celtic *sɸondo- (compare Breton houn, Irish sonn (“cudgel, beam”), from Proto-Indo-European *sph₂en- (compare Latin sponda (“bedstead”), English spoon, Greek σφήν (sfín, “wedge”)).
