From Middle Welsh ffonn, from Proto-Celtic *sɸondo- (compare Breton houn, Irish sonn (cudgel, beam), from Proto-Indo-European *sph₂en- (compare Latin sponda (bedstead), English spoon, Greek σφήν (sfín, wedge)).
