From Ottoman Turkish فیل دیشی (fildişi), from the elements also found in modern Turkish fil (elephant) and Turkish diş (tooth) (compare Romanian fildeș, Serbo-Croatian фѝлдиш/fìldiš, Greek φίλντισι (fílntisi) /'fildisi/).
