[edit]From a dialectal German *Fleituch (“cleaning rag”), from fleien + Tuch. Compare attested Fleilauge (“lye for rinsing”, 16th c.). The underlying verb is from Middle High German vlæjen ~ vlöuwen (“to wash”), probably from the same root as Polish pławić.
