Maltese

Etymology

Probably from Arabic فِي الْمَكان (fī al-makān, in the place, on the spot); compare Maltese mkien (place), kullimkien (everywhere). Perhaps from situations where suggesting that something be done “on the spot” implies that it be done by all of those present “together”, or, relatedly, where addressing all of those present “on the spot” means to address all of them “together”. Phonetically it could also be from Arabic فِي الْإمْكان (fī al-ʔimkān, possible, literally in the capacity), but this seems to be ruled out semantically.
