From Proto-Celtic *uɸokʷrinati (from *uɸo- + *kʷrinati); compare Welsh gobryn (to deserve) (and gobr (reward, payment, noun) from a corresponding noun form). Synchronically analyzable as fo- +‎ crenaid.
