From Old Swedish *giurdhil (attested in fægiurdhil), from older *gyrþil, from Old Norse gyrðill, from Proto-Germanic *gurdilaz, equivalent to gjorda (to gird) +‎ -el (instrumental suffix). Influenced by Low German gördel.
