Etymology
[edit]From Old Swedish *giurdhil (attested in fægiurdhil), from older *gyrþil, from Old Norse gyrðill, from Proto-Germanic *gurdilaz, equivalent to gjorda (“to gird”) + -el (“instrumental suffix”). Influenced by Low German gördel.
