Possibly of Germanic origin and from an unattested Gothic *𐌲𐌰𐌱𐌹𐌻𐌰 (*gabila, sparrow hawk), which would be related to Proto-West Germanic *gabulu. Compare the cognates listed at Spanish gavilán and Portuguese gavião.
