From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese gãado, from local Medieval Latin ganatus (“earned”), from Gothic *𐌲𐌰𐌽𐌰𐌽 (*ganan, “to covet”). Cognate with Portuguese gado, Spanish ganado.[1]
