Etymology[edit]
Probably from Old Frisian gete (“outpouring”), from Proto-Germanic *gutiz (“a gush; downpour; cloudburst”), related to the verb *geutaną (“to pour”). Cognate with Old English gyte (“a gush; flood; shedding; spillage”), German Guss (“downpour”).
