From Proto-Germanic *gahauzijaną. Related to Old Saxon gihorian, Old High German gahorjan (German gehören (“to belong”)), Gothic 𐌲𐌰𐌷𐌰𐌿𐍃𐌾𐌰𐌽 (gahausjan). Equivalent to ġe- + hīeran.
