Icelandic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Likely from Grýla (a folkloric ogress) +‎ kerti (candle). Probably derived from the fact that icicles look a lot like the stalactites found in caves and that since Grýla lives in a cave she would have used them as candles.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈkriːlʏˌcʰɛr̥tɪ/

Noun[edit]

grýlukerti n (genitive singular grýlukertis, nominative plural grýlukerti)

  1. icicle
