Italian

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Medieval Latin crīdāre (to cry out, publish, proclaim) (compare Spanish and Portuguese gritar, Catalan and Occitan cridar, French crier), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin quiritare (to shriek, wail) (—Diez), or from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Frankish *krītan (to cry out, shout, proclaim), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *krītaną (to cry out, shout), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *greid- (to shout) (—Littré). Akin to Middle Dutch crītan (to cry out) (Dutch krijten (to cry)). More at cry.
