gridare
Italian
Etymology
From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Medieval Latin crīdāre (“to cry out, publish, proclaim”) (compare Spanish and Portuguese gritar, Catalan and Occitan cridar, French crier), of uncertain origin. Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin quiritare (“to shriek, wail”) (—Diez), or from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Frankish *krītan (“to cry out, shout, proclaim”), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *krītaną (“to cry out, shout”), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *greid- (“to shout”) (—Littré). Akin to Middle Dutch crītan (“to cry out”) (Dutch krijten (“to cry”)). More at cry.
