Etymology

From Lua error in Module:etymology at line 156: Old Occitan (pro) is not set as an ancestor of Catalan (ca) in Module:languages/data/2. The ancestor of Catalan is Old Catalan (roa-oca). (compare Occitan catla, calha), from Vulgar Latin *quaqla or *coacla, from contraction of a Late Latin quaquila or coacula, itself either of imitative, onomatopoetic origin or alternatively from a Germanic source (cf. Frankish *hwahtila)[1]. Compare also French caille, Italian quaglia.

Pronunciation
