From Proto-Germanic *haliþaz (“man, hero”), further etymology unknown.
Cognate with Old High German helid (German Held), Old Saxon helid, Old Dutch helt (Dutch held), West Frisian held, Old Norse halr, hǫlðr (Norwegian hold, Swedish hjälte). The Indo-European root is also the source of Ancient Greek κέλωρ (kélōr), Tocharian B kālyśke (“boy”).
