From Old Swedish hemeliker, from Old Norse heimiligr, from Middle Low German heimelik, from Proto-Germanic *haimalīkaz, from Proto-Germanic *haimaz (home), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱey- (to lie, settle). Cognate with German heimlich, English homely.
