Borrowing from English hyoid, French hyoïde, from New Latin hȳoīdēs, from Ancient Greek ῡ̔οειδής (hūoeidḗs, shaped like the letter "υ"), from (û, the Greek letter upsilon) +‎ -ο- (-o-) +‎ -ειδής (-eidḗs, -like, -oid).
