From Proto-Germanic *huppōną (to hop), from Proto-Indo-European *kewb- (to bend, bow). Cognate with Dutch hoppen (to hop), German hopfen, hoppen (to hop), Swedish hoppa (to hop, leap, jump), Icelandic hoppa (to hop, skip).
