From Old Norse hvat, originally the neuter form of *hver (from Proto-Germanic *hwaz), but conflated with hverr (whence Modern Icelandic hver). Corresponds to Proto-Germanic *hwat, from Proto-Indo-European *kʷód, *kʷod. See hver.
