Uncertain. Possibly from a Vulgar Latin *ascla, from Latin astula or assula (compare Romanian așchie, Portuguese acha, Catalan ascla, Italian ascola), or alternatively from ēsca (compare Romanian iască, French esche, Sardinian esca).
