Etymology[edit]

From Old High German *gilouven (attested as inflected gilouves), northern variant of gilouben, from Proto-Germanic *galaubijaną.

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

jlööve (third-person singular present jlööv, preterite jloov or jlöövte, past participle jejloov or jejlööv)

  1. (most of Ripuarian) to believe
Dat kanns de denger Oma verzälle, die jlööv et vleech.
You can tell that to your grandma, she might believe it.

Usage notes[edit]

  • The traditional past forms jloov (plural jloovte), jejloov show rückumlaut. The forms jlöövte, jejlööv are younger forms without rückumlaut. The past tense is fairly rare in either form.
