Etymology

Inherited from Old Swedish klokstapul. By surface analysis, klocka (bell) +‎ stapel (stack; stocks). First attested in 1507[1]

Cognate with Danish klokkestabel, Norwegian Nynorsk klokkestopul and German Glockenstapel.
