Inherited from Old Czech kľúč, From Proto-Slavic *kľučь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kljaukjas, from Proto-Indo-European *klewk-yo-s, from *kle(h₂)uk-, an extended form of *(s)kleh₂w- (hook, key, peg).
