Etymology

From lapar, maybe under the influence of a derivative of Proto-Germanic *slarpaną (to sip, slurp), this from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *srebʰ- (to sip, slurp, gulp), cognate with Latin sorbere (to suck up, imbibe, absorb), whence sorber (to sip).
