From Proto-Germanic *lakjaną (to water, wet, irrigate), causative of Proto-Germanic *lekaną (to leak, drain), from Proto-Indo-European *leg- (to leak). Cognate with Old High German lecchen, lehhan (to drain, become dry), German lechzen (to be parched, thirst for, long for), German lecken (to leak), Dutch lekken (to leak), Old Norse leka (to leak, drip), Old English lacu (pond, stream, lake).
