Etymology

An original adjective formation after *lesh, *lesht + *-rik < *-nik (cf. besnik), reflecting (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *laḱso- (salmon, trout). Close to Lithuanian lašišà (salmon), Latvian lasis, and Middle Low German las (salmon), Russian лосо́сь (losósʹ, salmon). The sense development reflects the particular fish color.
