From Proto-Germanic *latjaną, from *lataz (late). Cognate with Old Frisian letta, Old Saxon lettian (Dutch letten), Old High German lezzan, Old Norse letja, Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (latjan).
