Etymology[edit]

Substratum word. Via what source is unknown, but ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *leuk- ‎(light). Another theory derives it from lucoare trough an intermediate *lucuri, or from a Vulgar Latin root *liculire, or it may be tied to Latin lucere. A less likely source is a Vulgar Latin root *liquorare, from liquere. Cf. Aromanian licuredz (variant licãrescu).
