Borrowed from French marmotte, from Middle French marmotte, from Old French marmotain, borrowed from Franco-Provençal marmotan, from Vulgar Latin *mures montani, from Latin mus monti (“mountain rat”). Akin to Macedonian мрмот (mrmot).
