Etymology[edit]

From either Ancient Greek μαδαίος (madaíos) or μαδαρός (madarós, wet) + σκώληξ (skṓlēx, worm). The second definition is from Latin malva + ibiscum (Althaea officinalis) and was influenced by the former one.
