Cognate with Cree ᒪᐢᑫᐠ (maskek, muskeg, swamp), Penobscot mə̀kəwahk (swamp), Malecite-Passamaquoddy pkuwahq, Unami tëlamàskèk (swamp), Menominee maskīk (swamp), Montagnais massekᵘ (marsh, bog, muskeg), Southern East Cree ᒪᔅᒉᒄ (mascekw, muskeg, bog), Northern East Cree ᒥᔅᒑᒄ (miscaakw, muskeg, bog, swamp).
