Etymology

From Old Norse miðvikudagr (midweek day), likely a calque of Old High German mittawehha (literally middle of the week). Cognate with Faroese mikudagur and Icelandic miðvikudagur. Attested as Mæckdan (definite form) in 1744 by H.J. Helsinge in Skaun dialect.
