From Proto-Germanic *midjaz (middle, mid), from Proto-Indo-European *medʰyo- (middle). Cognate with Old English midd, Old Frisian midde, Old Saxon middi, Old High German mitti, Gothic 𐌼𐌹𐌳𐌾𐌹𐍃 (midjis).
