[edit]From mi̠³⁵ (“(in compounds) mother; female”) + pʰa³⁵ (“(in compounds) father; male”); ultimately from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *mi (“female; girl; feminine suffix”) and Proto-Sino-Tibetan *p ~ ba (“male; father; third personal pronoun”) respectively. Cognate with Burmese မိဘ (mi.bha., “parents”). Compare Lhao Vo myhi” pho”.

Usage notes
[edit]The two elements of this word are no longer used to refer to “mother” or “father”. Loanwords from Jingpho, a³¹ nuŋ⁵⁵ for “mother” and a³¹ va⁵⁵ for “father”, are used instead.
