[edit]Back-formation from ɣnəmkʰo, as the term ɣnə might be a Qiangic root for "sun", cf. Khroskyabs ɣnə⁵⁵ (“sun”), Muya nə̱²⁴ (“sun”), and Horpa ɬə ɣnə (“moon”). Further from Classical Tibetan གནམ་མཁའ (gnam mkha', “sky, heaven”); or directly from Classical Tibetan མཁའ (mkha', “sky, heaven”).
