From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese mõgir, mugir (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin mulgēre, present active infinitive of mulgeō (I milk) (possibly through a Vulgar Latin *mungere; compare also Catalan munyir, Italian mungere), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂melǵ-. Cognate with English milk and Portuguese mungir.
