[edit]From Middle High German netzen, from Old High German nezzen, from Proto-Germanic *natjaną (“to make wet”). Cognate with Luxembourgish netzen, Dutch netten, Gothic 𐌽𐌰𐍄𐌾𐌰𐌽 (natjan), and possibly English netting (“urine”).
