From Middle Irish nighean, alteration of Old Irish ingen, from Primitive Irish ᚔᚅᚔᚌᚓᚅᚐ (inigena), from Proto-Celtic *eni-genā. Compare Scottish Gaelic nighean (“daughter; girl”), Manx 'neen (“daughter”).
