Etymology

Borrowed from Norwegian Nynorsk nemnd, from Old Norse nefnd (“denomination, name, tribunal”), derived from nefna (“to name, mention”), whence nevne. First standardized in 1938, it immediately became the main form prescribed for government use, which led to the fairly quick displacement of nevnd (from older Danish nævnd, now spelt nævn).
