Afrikaans[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Dutch neushoorn, equivalent to neus (nose) +‎ horing (horn), a calque of Ancient Greek ῥινόκερως (rhinókerōs).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈnɪøsˌɦʊə.rəŋ/

Noun[edit]

neushoring (plural neushorings, diminutive neushorinkie)

  1. (rare) rhinoceros

Usage notes[edit]

  • The term is rarely, if ever, applied to rhinoceros themselves, but survives in some compounds as an attribute, such as neushoringvoël (hornbill, literally rhinoceros bird)
