From Middle Welsh notwyð, from Proto-Brythonic *nọduɨð (compare Middle Breton nodoez/modern Breton nadoz/Gwenedeg dialect nadoé, Middle Cornish nasweth/modern Cornish nadzhedh), from a derivative of Proto-Celtic *snātos (thread), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)neh₁- (to spin, twist).
