[edit]From Middle Welsh notwyð, from Proto-Brythonic *nọduɨð (compare Middle Breton nodoez/modern Breton nadoz/Gwenedeg dialect nadoé, Middle Cornish nasweth/modern Cornish nadzhedh), from a derivative of Proto-Celtic *snātos (“thread”), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)neh₁- (“to spin, twist”).
