[edit]From Proto-Tocharian *e(n)- (“in”) + ultimately a form of Proto-Indo-European *medʰi- (“with, among”) (whence also Tocharian A mäcriṃ (“id”)) + the adjective-forming suffix -ṣṣe. Cognates include English middle, Lithuanian mẽdis (“wood”), Latin medium, etc.
