Czech
Etymology
Pronunciation
Adjective
orlův (possessive)
- (rare) eagle's
- 1888, Josef Kajetán Tyl, chapter 7., in Vlast a matka[1], Praha: Alois Hynek:
- […] svědomí její bylo jako diamant a vůle svobodná jako peruť orlova.
- […] her conscience was like a diamond and her will was free like an eagle's wing.
Usage notes
The possesive adjectives derived from nouns referring to animals (e. g. orlův) are used quite rarely,[1] the adjectives like orlí are used instead: orlí let is far more frequent than orlův let (eagle's flight). The possessive adjective is usually preferred when referring to a single animal, not to the animals (e. g. eagles) generally.
