Albanian

Etymology

From Proto-Albanian * ̊tupi-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)teu-p- (to push, beat). Cognate to Ancient Greek τύππω (túppō, to strike, beat). A formation with the prefix për-.[1] The root vowel has undergone umlaut. Alternatively from Proto-Indo-European *teup (to get down, conceal oneself). Compare Lithuanian tūpiù (to get down, lay on one's knees), Old Norse Þopta (thwart), Gothic 𐌸𐌹𐌿𐍆𐍃 (þiufs, thief).[2]
